Safe Counsel: A Complete Guide to Health Care and Home Remedies in the Late 19th Century
Published in Paperback by Heritage Books, Inc. (2000)
Author: Karen Hamilton Rager
Average review score:

From the author
Did you know that the cure in 1897 for the bite of rabid dog was to "ply with enough whiskey to induce sleep"?

This volume covers a wide scope of health related topics, including home remedies, the care of the sick, bathing and personal hygiene, puberty and reproduction, women's health issues and increasing longevity.

Originally published in 1897 as a home medical reference for the common people, you will find the topics amusing and sometimes still relevant for today's world.

This book is a must for writers, historians, genealogists, and just plain ordinary people! A fascinating read!!

Scott Hamilton Fireworks On Ice
This is a good basic bio of Scott Hamilton and I think it's a must read for Scott Hamilton fans of all age. There really is nothing new here, however you have to cull this information from various sources and it's nice to be able to read about the basics of this extraordinary athlete in one this one well written book. It's brief--as a book for youth should be and yet it covers the details of Scott's life very well.

There are a couple of inaccuracies I found - Scott debuted his new costume design in 1983, not 84--and he never landed a triple lutz/triple toe combination as stated-but nothing major.

The writing style is appropriate for youth without being overly simple. There are lots of good quality colorful pictures of Hamilton both as a child and as an amateur and pro.

This is a good book for young people, even if they aren't big fans of skating because Scott Hamilton is a wonderful role model for young people and this book well details the adversities he overcame in a positive way, w

Sentinel of the Southern Plains: Fort Richardson and the Northwest Texas Frontier, 1866-1878 (Chisholm Trail, No 5)
Published in Paperback by Texas Christian Univ Pr (April, 1988)
Author: Allen Lee Hamilton

Narrative history at its best!!!!
When it comes to Western history, and narrative history, this is the absolute best book I have ever read. If you like your cavalry and Indian stories in the best "John Ford/John Wayne" tradition, with the advantage of intensive and even-handed research, you simply have to buy this book. It reads like a novel, captures all the pathos of the era, and plays fair with both sides. In Hamilton's west, there are no good guys, and no bugles and guidons glory; there is only survival, and the understanding that, in the end, might does really make right, and the strongest do indeed survive. A fantastic read, and with the footnotes and bibliography, a must for the general reader and the specialist too. AND, the best treatment of the Warren Wagon Train Raid, one of the most important events in the history of the Southern Plains, ever done. FOUR STARS!

The Setter

Authors: Lynn Hamilton and Edward Laverack

The Setter, by Edward Laverack (Lynn Hamilton, editor)
The Setter, by Edward Laverack, is a must read for anyone interested in English Setters and the development of modern Setters. Laverack was one one of the seminal creators of today's Setter in Britain and North America. His discussion of the fine points of the breed and of Setter strains which existed during and prior to the 19th century make for fascinating reading. This book also features several fine additional articles by editor Lynn Hamilton. Highly recommended.

Sold to Miss Seeton (Heron Carvic's Miss Seeton)
Published in Paperback by Berkley Pub Group (September, 1996)
Author: Hamilton Crane
Average review score:

Great read
Ms. Seeton adventures are the best reads that I have come across. I am a thirty something that loves these types of British sleuthing novels. I re-read these novels several times a year, I have them all. My favorite used bookstore in Los Angeles had the entire series out of out-of-print ones, so I stocked up on all of them at once. They were over with too quickly. .... Maybe I should have waited and only gotten one book a month!!

They are truly one of a kind. I love the time period and the many scrapes that she seems to fall into. They're truly hilarious, while the novels maintain the suspense. I love Britain and try to get to London and environs once every couple of years or so.

South African Eden : from Sabi Game Reserve to Kruger National Park
Published in Unknown Binding by Collins ()
Author: James Stevenson-Hamilton
Average review score:

Fabulous account of how the Kruger National Park evolved
This book is the facintaing story of the birth of the Kruger National Park in South Africa. Set at the turn of the last century it charts the epic struggle of how one man changed the hearts of a nation which had hitherto treated wild animals only for sport.

The regular encounters with lions and other wild animals add extra excitement. This book must be read by anyone who has an interest in conservation or african wildlife.
